Included in Samsung’s wares are a multi-foldable device, a 17-inch foldable tablet, and a slidable display.
What Is Display Week 2021?
Display Week 2021 is an annual industry event hosted by The Society for Information Display, taking place the week commencing May 17, 2021. Samsung announced it would be attended the virtual trade show via its Samsung Display News Room.
At the online exhibition, Samsung will showcase prototypes of its upcoming foldable technology, grouped under the banner of “Better life through Samsung OLED”.
The CEO of Samsung’s display division, Joo Sun Choi, will give a speech at the event to talk about the future of the display industry and virtual reality.
What Foldable Devices Is Samsung Showcasing?
Samsung is showcasing a variety of next-generation OLED foldable prototypes.
One of these is the S-foldable, a device that can be folded twice. When fully opened the screen is 7.2 inches, to be used like a tablet. Folding it twice brings it down to the size of a smartphone. If reports are true, Samsung could launch its double-folding device this year.
Next up is a 17-inch 4:3 foldable OLED panel. Samsung says this would function as a portable monitor at full size and a tablet when folded. It’s similar in design to the Microsoft Surface Duo, though with thinner bezels, and larger than the ThinkPad X1 Fold’s 13.3-inch display.
Some of us remember when slide phones were all the rage; the display would push up to reveal the keyboard. With its third device, Samsung hopes to bring sliding phones back, though its slidable OLED display is more futuristic, with a concept that suggests the phone would slide out to the right to reveal more screen.
Away from foldables, Samsung will also showcase an under panel camera (UPC), which is something it has teased previously in a laptop called the Blade Bezel. This technology allows a camera to sit beneath a display, meaning bezels on a device like a laptop screen could be extremely thin.
Samsung promises that everything showcased at the online exhibition hall will also be available on the Samsung Display YouTube channel after the event has opened.
We’re still in the early days of foldable technology. Reports suggest that Apple will release a foldable iPhone in 2023, though it’s clear that Samsung plans to make large strides and claim its stake long before that happens.
