In this Lifetime biopic, simply called Salt-N-Pepa, the band’s central trio Salt, Pepa and Spinderella are played by All American’s GG Townson, The Bobby DeBarge Story’s Laila Odom and The Next Step’s Monique Paul respectively. The biopic will see the trio go from being nursing students to the band that brought us immortal party anthems like “Push It,” “Let’s Talk About Sex” and “Whatta Man.”
How to watch Salt-N-Pepa online
Salt-N-Pepa is set to air on Lifetime on Saturday, January 23 at 8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT, with the special running across three hours. It will also be followed by Let’s Talk About Salt-N-Pepa, which will see the real-life members of the band looking back over their career.
In the lead-up to the release of the biopic, Lifetime has released a preview of the movie which viewers can view on the Lifetime website right now.
The official Lifetime synopsis for the TV movie reads: “Salt-N-Pepa details the journey of Queensborough Community College students Cheryl ‘Salt’ James and Sandra ‘Pepa”‘Denton as they enter the world of rap and hip hop, after recording a song for their friend Hurby Azor. Salt-N-Pepa made a huge impact as one of the first all-female rap groups, changing the look of hip hop and being unafraid to talk about sex and share their thoughts on men.
“The movie follows the group as they become the first female rap act to go platinum and experience ground-breaking success with multiple awards, including a Grammy award - paving the way for all female rappers to follow. The film will feature performances of Salt-N-Pepa’s greatest hits, including: ‘Let’s Talk About Sex’, ‘What a Man’, ‘Shoop’ and ‘Push It’.
While the biopic is airing, viewers are able to watch the live stream on the Lifetime website and on the network’s app. All viewers have to do is visit mylifetime.com, click on the menu then on “Live TV.” Viewers can then sign in with their TV provider in order to watch the movie online as it airs on the network.
After airing, Salt-N-Pepa will also be available to watch on demand on the Lifetime website and app, though viewers will again have to sign into with their TV provider details to watch.
For viewers without cable who want to watch Salt-N-Pepa and other Lifetime movies, the network is part of a number of cable alternatives, with Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Philo, Vidgo and FuboTV all offering Lifetime streams. Though these services are all fairly expensive, they nearly all offer free trials, giving viewers plenty of time to watch the biopic online for free.
